What are the different types of pearls?
Natural Pearls are formed organically by molluscs. When bacteria gets inside a molluscs’ shell, it produces a layer of fluid called nacre which wraps around the irritant as a defence. The mollusc secretes layer upon layer of nacre to form a natural pearl. They come in different shapes, sizes, and colours, with the latter being determined by the type of water it’s in. Natural pearls are separated into saltwater or the more popular freshwater which is what you’ll find at Auree Jewellery.
Due to the length of time that it takes to make a pearl, not every pearl is natural but will be cultured or imitation pearls. Cultured pearls are made by molluscs that are farmed and purposely stimulated to activate the nacre reaction. Imitation pearls are manmade and created by glass beads that are dipped into a solution that makes them shiny and lustrous. Manmade pearls are not as high quality as natural or cultured pearls.
How do you tell a real pearl from a fake one?
The easiest way to tell if a pearl is real or fake is by its shape. Natural pearls come in all shapes and sizes and aren’t perfectly round, whereas manmade pearls will have an extremely round shape which is almost too perfect! Natural pearls also take longer to make and won’t fade, compared to manmade pearls which can lose their shine after multiple wearing. Natural and cultured pearls will also be more expensive than manmade pearls, mainly due to how long they take to make. Molluscs take 5-10 years to produce a pearl, making them incredibly rare and high quality.
How to look after your Pearl Jewellery?
To keep your pearls in their best condition, you should put your pearls on last and take them off first, so that they do not come into contact with body creams or perfume. Also store them properly and wipe over them with a cloth.
